tonight. the first heat related death. we have confirmed it and it happened in san jose yesterday, mayor matt mahan announcing the news on social media late this evening, saying, quote, a homeless neighbor lost their life on our streets due to the heat. it was an unavoidable tragedy and exactly why we're moving with urgency to create enough basic, dignified shelter for everyone. now, we've been talking about this for days. we're seeing those dangerous temperatures across the bay area. let's bring in our meteorologist, vianey arana. yeah. and you know the temperatures right now. i mean, it's 11:00 at night. and when we talk about not a lot of recovery overnight, this is what we mean. look at south san jose still at 81 degrees, san jose at 74, sunnyvale 75, san francisco. and the coastline. these are some of our cooler spots in some areas. we're running just a few degrees cooler, but not extremely
11:02 pm
noticeable, especially when we're talking about inland temperatures. now, we're also going to be seeing heading into the overnight hours as well, that low humidity we don't typically get to see that as far as the recovery goes because of that high pressure. we're not going to see the recovery in the humidity. so that elevated fire danger is expected to continue for your 4th of july forecast as well. and by tomorrow, we're expecting another day of triple digit heat. so any sort of outdoor activity is definitely going to have to be limited. we'll have a closer look at just how hot we're going to get into your 4th of july forecast and the week ahead. coming up in a few minutes. vianey, thanks very much. and as she was just saying, no relief in sight. a live look over walnut creek where it is still hovering around 80 degrees at 11:00 at night, sweltering heat. there's a lot of people rethinking their 4th of july plans, and some events have been canceled. nbc bay area's pete suratos joins us from danville, where that town's parade will go on. despite the heat. but, pete, people are being urged to come to the parade prepared. yeah. that's
11:03 pm
right. and when we talk about this, danville 4th of july parade, it draws nearly 40,000 people. in fact, you see here tonight, some folks have already set up their seats, getting ready for that parade. now, despite the heat, this parade is still going to go on as planned. but some other cities in the county are taking a different route. the streets of downtown danville are lined with lawn chairs tonight, people reserving a spot to catch the town's annual 4th of july parade, which draws nearly 40,000 people every year. this is small town america and this is what we need. yep. don't we just talked about this at dinner. this is our heritage. the annual parade will take place during the excessive heat warning in danville. leaders are hoping locals don't take the warning lightly. we are telling people how to best prepare for the parade and that may include skipping this year. we certainly are encouraging people to not have their pets come with them
11:04 pm
this year, due to the fact that pavement can get really hot and make sure that you bring blankets to sit on, especially if you're going to have little kids. but the hot weather is forcing some cities to change. 4th of july plans in the north bay. both saint helena and healdsburg are canceling fireworks shows due to red flag conditions and in the city of antioch, the annual 4th of july parade is canceled due to the heat, but the event is set for the evening will go as planned. it was important for us to, to keep people safe. it's too just dangerously hot. it's too dangerously hot for the elderly to be outside. it's too dangerously hot for young children to be outside. fireworks. right. that are going to be right over mount diablo. right concord is another city expecting a big turnout for its 4th of july events, beginning with a parade and ending with a festival and fireworks at mount diablo high. and organizers are taking precautions to make sure everyone has a fun and safe time in the heat. we're making sure we're messaging it really well to the different participants that are going to be in the parade hey, you know, please
11:05 pm
bring water. we're going to make sure things are available for people as well for the festival. we're going to have like a little misting station. pete serratos, nbc bay area news. all right. let's talk about the other big issue power outages. they're just continuing to pop up, making it difficult for anyone to cool down. these temperatures, even tonight, are super high. this is the outage map that you're looking at from pg&e. yellow spots on the map indicate outages affecting anywhere between 50 to 500 customers. despite that heat, a lot of people going outside nbc bay area's gia vang is live in pleasanton, where the alameda county fair was still hopping tonight, even though there were some high temps and triple digits. still a lot cooler than it was earlier today there. and that is a fan favorite. you can't miss the alameda county fair. yeah, jessica, as you can see, people are trickling out. they just closed the fair. but this was one item that was being handed out today. this is from the alameda county fire department. and it's ways to stay cool. it says drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, never leave children or pets in the car. all good tips as these
11:06 pm
scorching temperatures impact so many. the sun's less power rays during the evening. is one of the biggest reasons some decided to explore the alameda county fair tonight, but they're here with a plan. i'm going to go inside for the shopping, get my little air conditioned breaks, and then head back out to the heat so that i can eat some more. if they weren't inside, people were in the shade or finding quick ways to cool off under misters. it feels like really like calming. like especially on my like back because like, it's all like this sounds like beaming down the unofficial high in pleasanton topped out at 104 degrees, putting a strain on the power grid. pg&e crews tried to get power back on for many, but this neighborhood was left without during the hottest parts of the day. worrying this new father. i went to safeway over here, the local safeway, to try to find ice to just see in case because of breast milk in the freezer to keep it cool. they said they weren't selling anything because they were power out. neighbors

found creative ways to keep their appliances running. my boyfriend got the hybrid f-150, so we're really lucky to be able to run an extension cord through the window and at least get the fridge going, as well as phones. it was at like 2, so i had to come down to my car, turned on my car and use the battery for my car. at this ace hardware on sunol boulevard. it's the capacitor section. terry bell is directing customers to. if you want your air to go on, you need that the first time a heat wave hits. that's pretty much when they start going out and fair. representatives told us they had about 15,000 people here on this day last year. in terms of today, they won't know that number until tomorrow. but we do know that it was a slow start because of that heat. back to you in the studio. all right. gia, thank you very much. let's talk about fire danger now, i'm also a big concern this week, and you might have noticed the smoke in the sky. this is what
11:08 pm
it looked like as the sun set in san jose tonight. that haze is from the thompson fire in butte county. and fire has burned more than 3500 acres since it sparked yesterday morning. flames have forced 28,000 people to evacuate and have destroyed at least four buildings. another 12,000 are threatened, including some in the city of oroville. tonight, we have learned that eight firefighters have been injured. the governor has now issued a state of emergency for that fire. it's 7% contained tonight. a much smaller fire continues to burn in lake county. it's still forcing evacuations, though. the so-called adams fire near clear lake has burned 16 acres. it is 15% contained. that started about 330 this afternoon on main street in lower lake. cal fire says firefighters will be on scene all night building control lines to get more containment. well as you just heard, fire crews have been super busy. but tomorrow is the fourth and that means fireworks. and often the illegal kind that can cause a lot of problems. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran continues our love
11:09 pm
coverage from cal fire headquarters in morgan hill. they have to be bracing for the worst. yeah, they have to be prepared, jess. and, you know, we asked cal fire just how often they see fires being sparked by fireworks. they say it happens every year, unfortunately, and complicating things this year, crews are busy. many firefighters are battling fires in other parts of the state. what's top of mind? safety, 100. safety of our personnel. safety of the public. cal fire is preparing for what could be a busy 4th of july. the message tonight we want the public to know that it is not permissible to use illegal fireworks because just one spark could ignite a fire and have dangerous consequences. this year, conditions like the triple digit heat and the dry vegetation add to the danger, but firefighters are prepared. we are fully staffed and we're working to continue kind of buffering those numbers and bring in more personnel. it has a lot to do with the fires in the state
11:10 pm
happening. we have resources that got sent out to support some of the other fires that are happening. and so because of that, we bring more resources in. in santa clara county, gilroy is the only city that allows so called safe and sane fireworks. i'm just going to hang out with the house barbecue, set up some fireworks in san jose all fireworks are illegal. so if you're at a social gathering with illegal fireworks, the host, the person with the fireworks, and spectators can face fines. there's also a form online where neighbors can report illegal fireworks. officials say leave the fireworks to the professionals. there's a lot of safety practices that are put in before those shows are even allowed to start. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news okay, tomorrow is going to be hot again, so here's a reminder a lot of cities have opened cooling centers. they've got water, power outlets, free wi-fi with the fact that people are losing power. this is a good thing to know about. our team has compiled a list. use your

rest of the shooters. a live look at the white house. that is where governor newsom was today. he says he is standing behind president biden after that shaky debate, newsom, among a group of 20 democratic governors who met with the president today. that meeting lasted about an hour. afterwards, the governor said. while they did express concerns about biden's debate performance last week, they did not join other democrats urging him to leave the race. governor newsom posted on social media after the meeting, saying in part, quote, i heard three words from the president tonight. he's all in and so am i. the governors of new york, maryland and minnesota spoke to reporters outside the white house. we will stand with the president as we fight that force, that force being donald trump. and together we'll make sure that americans know not just what joe biden did for all of us, but where he's going for the future and where he's going to take this country. we feel very confident in his abilities. this all comes as a president increases his outreach to lawmakers in an effort to double

down on plans to run for reelection. his campaign also held separate, all hands on deck calls during the day. well, governor newsom also announced that he is releasing a new weekly podcast this month. it is called politicking. the governor will host alongside oakland native and former nfl running back marshawn lynch and his agent doug hendrickson. the host promised that the podcast will cover more than just politics. it is set to launch on july 15th. okay, we're back in 60s ahead. you might be one of them. an update from patelco after that ransomware attack that left so many customers nervous and without their money along the credit union says it'll take to get everything up and running again. yeah, like a scene out of a hollywood blockbuster. this jaw dropping video out of the east bay and the help police say they need tonight as they investigate that crash. it's 74

searching for a driver responsible for this fiery crash on carrington street happened last friday, june 28th, just after midnight. surveillance video shared with us shows the driver hit the center median and lost control crashed into multiple cars. that driver was able to get out of the car and got out of their escape before police could catch him. anyone with information is asked to contact oakland pd. a big development tonight involving oakland's embattled 911 system. opd says the state has granted it a reprieve over its failing 911 response time. yeah, the city was given one year to fix the problem or faces 911 system
11:16 pm
being shut down. we broke the news yesterday. oakland is not going to meet that deadline this month, but investigative reporter candice nguyen learned the state has changed its tune about two weeks ago, the california office of emergency services told me it stood by its original warning to oakland, which was fix your 911, answering times by july 26th or lose state funding and be forced to reroute your emergency calls. but now cal oes is adjusting its approach. late last night, after we reported oakland is not going to make this deadline, opd sent out this new letter from the state noting oakland has made headway, stating as long as continued improvement is being made, the state will take no further action. however, if oakland does not keep up all this progress, cal oes said oakland pd may be subject to referral to the attorney general for further action. i spoke with oakland police today. they don't expect that to happen. they believe they can get their 911 times into compliance by fall
11:17 pm
winter 2025. so our dispatch center is one of the hardest working dispatch centers in the state. if not the country. has the state provided opd a benchmark for those improvements? specifically, what goal does opd need to reach next and when? so the state did not provide an exact benchmark. however, each month we see our call answering speeds improve. i want our community to know that if you have an emergency in oakland and you call 911, our dispatchers will be there to pick up the phone. you'll recall, for the past year, we have been reporting that oakland has had the worst 911 answering times out of any city or county in california, 3 to 4 times longer than the state standard. last summer, after we started asking questions, the state put oakland on notice. oakland's mayor responded by investing an additional $2.5 million into 911 and streamlining dispatcher hiring. now, i've reached out to cal oes again, asking, how is the state going to ensure that
11:18 pm
oakland keeps moving forward? we have not heard back from that state agency, but as oakland deputy director, subtle said she believes the city will be back on track by next year with the investigative unit. i'm candice wen, nbc, bay area news. okay. thank you, candice. we'll await your updates. all right. your money is safe. that is the message from dublin based credit union patelco to its customers tonight. this after a ransomware attack hit the transfers, direct deposits and balance inquiries. so all that's been shut down tonight. patelco is telling customers their money is secure. company says it has cybersecurity experts working around the clock to get everything back up and running. but patelco doesn't believe that's going to happen before the weekend, one of the state's largest insurers started dropping policies. today, state farm says it plans to start shedding 30,000 homeowner rental and other policies in california. it won't happen all at once. instead state farm says it will drop the policies on a rolling basis over the next year. the move is the latest
11:19 pm
example of insurers pulling back their coverage in california, citing growing costs and increased risk for disasters such as wildfires. so what can you do if your policy gets dropped or. nbc bay area responds team recently made a video with what you can do to protect yourself, and you can find that on the nbc bay area youtube page. okay, so will the weather cooperate for the big show? this is the live look over san francisco. thousands of people are expected to line the embarcadero tomorrow night. crews spent the day loading up two barges at pier 50. tomorrow, those barges will go out into the water and the fireworks will be shot from opposite sides of the bay. show's producer says they've been planning this display for months. they're encouraging everyone to come out and see the show instead of trying to fire off fireworks at home. the safest way to celebrate the 4th of july with fireworks is to come out to a big public display, and the folks in san francisco are particularly lucky to have a
11:20 pm
city that will provide them with a world class display to see. so if you want to go check it out, check out our independence day guide. we can have a lot of info there for you. scan the qr code. we've got a complete list of celebrations, parades, fireworks and if you're planning on being out in the heat, remember to stay cool and stay hydrated and usually vianey when we ask this, usually on the 4th of july because it's usually cloudy, but with this heat, i'm i'm assuming it's going to be clear skies. it is. normally we're on fog watch right around the 4th of july and we do have some clouds creeping in through parts of monterey, but it's really down south. we're not expecting to see a lot of that make its move in. might get some slight cooling around the coast, which is what we saw today. and dare i say, even for tomorrow night, if you're going to be around san francisco, always wear layers. right now we're at 62 degrees in san francisco, 61 in half moon bay, and we've got some 70s and still 80 degrees in south san jose. so let's get right to your microclimate forecast. so we can also talk about what areas either beat or match previous
11:21 pm
daily record highs. santa rosa was one of those locations, 103 today and matching the record set back in 2001. concord setting a new record daily high of 107, beating that previous record of 106 at the oakland airport 94 degrees, and then in livermore, probably one of our hottest spots in the bay area today. a verified 110, beating the previous record of 109 and hayward 99 degrees. with that previous record of 98 degrees. so we're definitely expecting to see the potential for more record breaking heat in the upcoming days, and the humidity is also right now starting to recover somewhat in most spots, with the exception of areas like notice livermore. fairfield still at 28. and this is the reason why the red flag warnings are in effect and have been extended. the dangerous heat wave right now is expected to last through next week. we've got the heat warnings in effect
11:22 pm
until wednesday, july 10th for the highlighted areas. yes, that's through the weekend into the middle of next week. that red flag warning was also extended. now it's going to be in place through saturday. normally we look at high temperatures. we also look at the low humidity and winds. not much in the way of winds, but right now, with how dry we are, any sort of breeze could really be of concern. and notice we've also got a coastal flood advisory with folks heading to the beach. keep in mind that we're going to expect to see that in effect through 5 p.m, i should say, on friday, and then look at the heat risk into tomorrow for the 4th of july. we're still going to be in the triple digits in a lot of spots, including the interior. heading into your friday forecast, not much relief there. still sticking to that triple digit mark in the interior areas. and then that high pressure unfortunately does look like it settles in over the weekend. and what that's going to do is that's going to heat us up again. and i think this is the reason why we're going to see this stretching out all the way through next week. unfortunately
11:23 pm
for us, not much in the way of relief. look at that ten day forecast 90s into next week beyond that wednesday stretch. but if you're looking for relief, the coast is going to have it for you. absolutely. also, we're looking at that air quality because of the smoke and the fireworks and all of that. so all right. vianey thanks. well, up next, you've probably driven past it, but now you could actually go inside the famous flintstone house on the peninsula, opening its doors to the public. happening now, on the eve of independence day, the united states has accepted 76 new citizens during a ceremony on the uss hornet. the ship is docked in alameda. the new citizens took their oath today, surrounded by friends and family. we have posted the full story on our to reopen.
